Fellow Husband,

Let me tell you a story about my best friend.

His name is Luther and he is a perfect specimen...

He's big, strong, handsome and smart.

But...sometimes...he acts kind of...well...unusual...

For example...

A few weeks ago...my wife and I were sitting in the living room... watching television... Luther walks into the middle of the living room and... completely out of the blue... starts a wild "air humping" kind of thing... he does TWO complete circles around the living room... NEVER FOR A SECOND stopping these almost obscene gyrations... and then just exits the living room!

Sue was horrified and spent quite a bit of energy yelling at Luther to "STOP THAT!"

I, on the other hand, like the mature adult I am, spent the entire time egging him on..."Go Luther! That's My Boy!"

Needless to say, Sue was pleased with neither of us.

Now, I don't blame him for acting like this in front of Sue and I...in fact I sort of feel responsible for his "unusual" behaviour.

Let me explain...

Luther is my dog.

Maybe I should have mentioned that first?

You see, one of my wife's passion is dogs and so she is also passionate about doing "what's best" for Luther, as well. And, unfortunately for Luther, that means several things:

The first, and scariest is...

As soon as possible...as young as possible...she tosses every... unsuspecting... male puppy in the car for an evil trip to a terrible place... her vet's office...where this poor little guy has his testicles removed...

Now, I love Sue. And, I know she knows more than I do (which is virtually nothing) about dogs; she's practically the female "Dog Whisperer."

So, I know (in my head) that everything she does for Luther is in his best interest. Neutering him means that he won't escape the back yard and create some additional puppies that need rescued. It means that he will probably be less likely to get certain types of cancer and he'll, most likely live longer.

But, between you and I, I've had many day dreams where I rescued him from that trip to the vet's office because, as in my example above...

If you've ever had a male dog, you know that one of their favorite things is to (how do I say this politely?) "hump" everything and anything in sight.

But, after a male dog has been neutered, this (perfectly natural and normal...for dogs) behaviour gets a little strange.

Sue's punishment for the "humping dance" (Notice him looking at ME with a sad, betrayed look.)

What's the point of this story?

No matter how "well intentioned" the motives... when you start to mess with God's intentions for males...of any species...it can have some unintended and bizarre consequences.

In our house, when any of the male dogs get "out of line," Sue is quick to "put them in their place." Sometimes this means she physically corrects them. Sometimes it means she sprays them with a water bottle. Sometimes it just means she puts them in a silly hat and takes a picture of them.

But, the bottom line is...

She is training the "maleness" out of Luther.

She is teaching him to act against his God-given nature.

She is...ultimately...trying to make him less like a male...

And, trust me, the "air humping" thing is not the only strange behaviour that this "training" produces.

No matter how well trained, he will never, completely, lose his deep-seated natural instincts to be male and his "trained" attempts to fight these instincts, occassionaly, causes him quite a bit of emotional stress, frustration and confusion.

He still believes that he is supposed to be a fighter and a protector. But, God forbid, he displays agression to the mail man at the door; he is "supposed" to reign in his purpose and sit calmly and quietly. Ultimately, his only real opportunity to be a warrior is chasing the birds out of our back yard.

Now, Luther has done nothing wrong.

Most days, I feel he's doing a better job pursuing God's purpose for his life than I am for mine.

Have you heard what Mark Twain once said about this?

"Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in..."

And, honestly, I know that, for him (being a dog and all), it probably is best for him to push back against his natural inclinations. He isn't a part of a wild pack; he lives in the suburbs after all.

And, it's too late for me to save him from his (sometimes) frustrating and confusing situation. But...

It's not too late for me to help you to overcome your confusion and frustration...and...unlike Luther's situation...I am sincerely concerned and angry about yours...and mine... and I've done something about it... and you can too!

I'm concerned because I know that, like Luther, you also are just trying your balance your God-given natural instincts against your "training" and this can cause you confusion, frustration and a feeling of being alone.

I'm also concerned because I've dedicated over a decade of my life to helping other Christian men to NOT be confused, frustrated or feeling alone...especially in their marriages and sex lives.

I've had quite a bit of success in this mission, but there are still some men that I have not been able to help as fully as I would like.

For some men, my books and other resources can only take them so far.

And, for most men, personal counseling with me is not a realistic option...financially or geographically.

And, frankly, finding a "good" and truly helpful counselor, locally, can be quite difficult.

As much as I would love to be able to personally work with each and every person in our various audiences, it's just not realistic or practical...our various lists of clients, customers and subscribers now include over 40,000 people.

I'm angry because I feel that...in this past decade...things have gotten worse...instead of better...for Christian men...society...even worse... the church have tried to "neuter" and "train" their God-given maleness right out of them!

Look...

I understand that, on some levels, this attempt to "neuter" and "train" Christian men is well intentioned. Like Luther, none of us are actually in a pack (canine or human); most us us do live in the suburbs.

But, well intentioned or not, it's just gone too far...

It makes it more difficult for a man to be who God designed him to be, as a husband, father and man...when society and his church are telling him that it's "the right thing to do" to be less male.

It certainly makes my job (helping men to fully express and enjoy their sexuality) more difficult.

Why?

Because...

"Small men" can't accomplish "big things"...

Of course I don't mean your height or weight; I'm referring to the size of your soul...your spirit and ability draw upon your God-given wells of strength, courage and masculinity.

Jesus said...

"From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing and forceful men lay hold of it..."

-Matthew 11:12

Society, with it's promotion of "metrosexuals" and gay and feminist "rights" has no place for a "real man"; a man that is not afraid to express his true nature...his God-given and natural need and desire to express himself...as a husband...a lover...and a Christ follower...working with his masculinity...instead of against it. It's currently very non "PC" and non "cool" to be "a man's man."

And the church, in large part, has jumped right on this "men should be women" bandwagon...

Did you know that only 40% of "regular church attenders" are men?

Here's what Pastor Mark Driscoll says about this fact...

“I've gotta think these guys (David, Paul, John the Baptist) were dudes. Heterosexual, win a fight, punch you in the nose dudes. And the problem in the church today is it's just a bunch of nice, soft, tender, chick-ified church boys... Sixty percent of Christians are female and the forty percent that are dudes are still sort of chicks.

I mean, it's just sad. When you walk in, it's sea foam green and fuschia and lemon yellow. The whole architecture and the whole aesthetic is feminine and the preacher is kind of feminine and the music is kind of emotional and feminine and we're looking around going, 'How come we're not innovative?' Its because all the innovative dudes are at home watching football.”

And, Christian Comedian and Founder of the group, Godmen, says...

"Why does everyone keep telling me that I need to (even more) find my feminine side? Why doesn't anyone ever ask women to find their masculine side? I found my feminine side...and then married her...I have more than enough femininity in my life, thank you!"

Here's the real issue...

That masculine, "guy" side of you is your only hope of truly fulfilling your potential as a Christian husband, lover, father or man...in the Bible...it's referred to as your "Thumos"...

Here's what Christian Author Paul Coughlin says about Thumos...

"Thumos is found eighteen times in the New Testament; seven of those occurrences refer to God's wrath. In Galatians, we see an example of shadow thumos in the word jealousy, which when smoldering breaks out in wrath. Thumos and another word for "wrath" (orge) are coupled in two places in Revelation: "the fierceness (thumos) of his wrath [orge]" and "the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God...

For most of us, that's as far as our one-dimensional understanding of this beneficial-slash-harmful attribute goes. The following is a good example: One popular New Testament commentary shows how narrow is our comprehension of this vibrant attribute. The author states that thumos means "wrath" and "hot." "Wrath is like a volcano….stuff a cork in it...

Noble thumos burns for the good of others, for God's will to be done on earth as in heaven, and thus it causes people to act; wrathful anger is usually personal, born of envy, self-absorbed, and vengeful. Stuffing a cork in thumos will diminish your spiritual growth and weaken your faith-in-action! Anything that says otherwise is a misguided recipe for being unable to wrestle with and tackle real issues in real life.

Why do we applaud heroic strength in films (for instance) if there's something wrong with having it at church? This is a sign that we don't honor what our souls tell us is right and good because somehow it doesn't appear "spiritual" enough..."

It's not about trying to become more selfish, self-centered or demanding...it's also not about being "macho." If so...I'm in trouble...

I couldn't tell an alternator from a gas cap.

My wife is far more "handy" around the house than I am.

It's about being strong internally and drawing that strength from the deep wells of masculinity that God gave you.

It's certainly not about lowering the status of women.

It is simply the need to create a space where "men can be men"...and be bigger and better men...husbands...lovers and fathers...by finding the freedom to express their God-given masculinity in a "guys only" environment....that encourages learning...growing...and questioning...without the restrictions of being trying to be "nice" or worrying about offending our wives with our honesty...

So, I created one...
